Pre-orders HTC phone go live

UK buyers can now place a pre-order to secure the HTC Butterfly smartphone, which will feature a five inch touch panel display and some of the top hardware components currently available.
It was originally thought that Brits would be missing out on the Butterfly and indeed HTC has remained confident that it is not officially releasing this particular handset here.
However, online retailer, Expansys, listed the phone on its e-commerce site this week, prompting many to assume that it will indeed be landing in the UK.
There are lots of tasty features onboard the Butterfly, with its five inch touch panel display featuring a full HD 1080p resolution. This means it is large and also offers a much higher pixel density than its closest rival, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.
Whether or not the HTC Butterfly gets a UK launch via official channels, it seems certain that this Taiwanese manufacturer will release similarly specified handsets next year, in order to compete with rivals.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony Xperia Yuga are likely to match the Butterfly in the display department, so British consumers will not be short on high end smartphone options.

Cambrios CEO John LeMoncheck to Highlight Alternative Materials Enabling Touch Panels

Dec 10, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Cambrios Technologies Corporation:
        WHO:
John LeMoncheck, President and CEO of Cambrios Technologies
                   Corporation
WHAT: Numerous disruptive display technologies are entering the market,
with OLED leading the way. DisplaySearch estimates the OLED screen
market could reach $44 billion by 2019, up from $4 billion in 2011.
In addition to large OLED TV's, leading CE companies like Samsung
are actively developing curved and flexible OLED displays.
Regardless of the display technology, consumers expect beautiful,
high-resolution screens with increasingly demanding touch capabilities. To equip tomorrow's most advanced display devices with
high performance touch screens and excellent optical properties,
device makers are abandoning indium tin oxide (ITO) in favor of
affordable, flexible, new transparent conductive materials.
John LeMoncheck will be joined by executives from LG Electronics and
Kent Displays in a panel discussion entitled, "The Download on New
Display Technologies," to assess the advantages of and differences
between various new display technologies including AMOLED, Crystal
LED, Retina and flexible displays. John will also highlight why
Cambrios' ClearOhm(TM) material is replacing ITO and
enabling the next generation of touch-enabled displays.
WHY: In order to equip the latest curved or flexible devices with the
advanced touch capabilities consumers now expect, device makers must
utilize flexible materials such as ClearOhm coating material - the
only commercially available solution processed transparent
conductive material with performance rivaling or exceeding that of
ITO. Priced to enable consumer devices, ClearOhm solutions are also
changing the OLED lighting landscape. Cambrios has also demonstrated
OLED lighting with efficiencies of more than 40 Lm/W using ClearOhm

New AsureSpace Touch Panels Have Power Over Ethernet

Asure Software, Inc., a leading provider of workplace management software solutions, today announced the next generation of AsureSpace Touch Panels. The digital displays feature power over Ethernet, an enhanced user interface, multi-room support and simple customization — all designed to enhance the efficiency of scheduling and managing meeting rooms across organizations of all sizes.
“Our goal with this new generation of AsureSpace Touch Panels is to make our innovative displays even easier to configure, install and use, thereby helping our clients improve the efficiency of their workplace while maximizing their real-estate utilization,” said Pat Goepel, CEO of Asure Software. “The panels’ evolution is in keeping with our philosophy of developing solutions that ‘keep it simple’ and deliver a high return on investment.”
AsureSpace Touch Panels, integrated with the AsureSpace Meeting Room Manager, Resource Scheduler and Workspace Manager solutions, are eight-inch tablets enclosed within a wall-mountable case and feature an LED light bar to easily indicate if a room is available. The intuitive, easy-to-use user interface includes multiple display options that can easily be configured during setup, including the ability to customize logo and branding.
Since the panels are powered over the Ethernet — meaning that just one low-voltage cable supplies both network connectivity and power to the units — there is no need for electrical outlets. This is especially convenient since the panels are designed to be placed directly outside a room’s entrance. Industry-standard Video Electronics Standards Association mounting cases makes them easy to install on walls. Further, a single panel can serve two rooms with entrances located close to one another.
AsureSpace Touch Panels make ad hoc booking easy. Users can view availability and make room reservations directly on the touch panel screen; or they may choose to use their desktop or mobile device to access the scheduling application. Two-way integration with the AsureSpace Meeting Room Manager, Resource Scheduler and Workspace Manager solutions eliminates double bookings. Any open time — even times during the current day — may be booked. When users arrive at a room, just a glance at the red (occupied) or green (free) light answers the question “Is this room available?”
Asure Software, Inc., headquartered in Austin, Texas, offers intuitive and innovative technologies that enable companies of all sizes and complexities to operate more efficiently and better control costs. The company ensures a high-performing work environment by delivering its “keep it simple” solutions and expertise to more than 11,000 clients worldwide. Asure Software’s suite of solutions ranges from time and attendance workforce management solutions to intelligent on-demand workplace management solutions.

USPTO tentatively invalidates key Apple multitouch patent

USPTO tentatively invalidates all claims of key Apple multitouch patent
The US Patent and Trademark Office tentatively invalidated Apple’s so-called rubber-banding patent back in October, and it looks like it’s now done so again with one of the company’s key multitouch-related patents. According to FOSS Patents, the USPTO has issued an Office Action rejecting all 20 claims of patent 7,479,949, which is specifically related to scrolling and is described as “Touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristics.” Unlike the rubber-banding patent, though, this one did not figure in Apple’s recent trial with Samsung, although it has been used in cases against Motorola and HTC.
Update: To be clear, this is just the first step of the patent’s re-examination and Apple gets to respond to each of the issues raised by the USPTO. So, invalidation of all (or any) of the claims is far from assured.

Amazon bringing Voice Guide and Explore by Touch features to Kindle Fires for vision-impaired users

Amazon’s been attuned to the needs of its vision-impaired customers for years, first rolling out text-to-speech technologyon its original Kindle e-reader years ago. Today the company revealed plans to add to that feature set in its Kindle Fire andFire HD (7-inch) tablets with Voice Guide and Explore by Touch technology.
Voice Guide’s an improvement upon regular text-to-speech tech that reads aloud any action performed by users — things like announcing app names and book titles when they’re selected. Explore by Touch lets folks swipe their fingers across their Fire’s display and identifies each onscreen item as their phalanges pass over them. Once aware of what app or piece of content’s being touched, a simple tap opens the item. Ready for the new assisted navigation experience right now? Well, all you anxious Fire owners will have to wait, the update doesn’t land until early next year.

Twitterrific 5 for Twitter going live for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users
Twitter’s API rules haven’t exactly made life grand for third-party clients, but that’s not stopping one of the larger names in the sector from pumping out a redesigned version of its famed app for iPhone 5 and iPad. The Iconfactory’s Twitterrific 5 for Twitter (yes, that’s the full name) is now available in regions where it’s official December 6th, with the rest of the world expected to see it in the coming hours. It’s a completely overhauled and redesigned effort, boasting a unified timeline, support for Apple’s newest iOS devices, “robust” VoiceOver support, custom themes, pull to refresh, and plenty of other power options for those who’d be willing to pay for such luxuries. Heck, there’s even offline support for posting, favoriting and following. Early adopters should be able to snag a copy for under $5, but the introductory fare is slated to expire at an undetermined point in the future.
