Phoenix project reincarnates WebOS as Nexus S app

After its untimely demise, WebOS showed some resilience by coming back in open source form and popping up in various devices hither and yon. On the vanguard of that resurrection isPhoenix International Communications, a team of volunteers who've managed to port the orphaned OS to a Samsung Nexus S device, running as an app inside Android. So far, the reborn OS app is displaying decidedly zombie-like slowness, but it's still an early pre-alpha build. If all goes well, you might one day be able to seamlessly switch between WebOS and Android without rebooting, letting you run apps from both systems. So, if you've been carrying a torch for the fallen system, check the video after the break.

Hack enables fast refresh mode on Nook Simple Touch

As anyone who's used an e-reader knows, page refreshes aren't the most elegant feature of E Ink. Well, if you've got a Nook Simple Touch a hack released by XDA Developers member marspeople could put an end to your page-changing woes. You'll need to root your device and install an .apk, then simply activate fast refresh mode by a four-tap gesture -- sadly, not the Konami code. What is impressive, is just how fast the screen refreshing actually is. Fluidly browsing documents and the web on e-readers suddenly has the potential to be a whole lot less frustrating. Check the video after the break to see a demo, and touch the source link below if you want in on the fun.

MeridianSooloos produce first jointly developed touchpanel: Control 10

Given just how zany the past few months have been in the HD world, you probably
forgot all about Meridian and Sooloos' little tie-up back in December. Lo and behold,
the newly conjoined company has just released its first jointly developed product,
the Control 10 touchscreen. The device integrates Meridian's proprietary connectivity
with a Sooloos touchscreen in order to create what's called the "most user-friendly
media-access solution yet." For those with lots of Meridian equipment, it'll be hard to
let this one pass given just how well it'll integrate, and there's also RS-232 for more
widespread control. Hop on past the break for the nitty-gritty, but only after you've
grown comfortable with the $5,000 asking price.

Meridian Sooloos, Together At Last: New Touchscreen Available

Control 10 now offers Meridian SpeakerLink/Comms Connectivity for Simple
Integration

New York, New York, March 13, 2009‹Meridian is pleased to deliver the first
of its new designs with Sooloos, the recently acquired manufacturer of
server-based home entertainment systems widely acknowledged as the most
innovative and sophisticated available. The Control 10 integrates Meridian¹s
proprietary connectivity with the award-winning Sooloos touchscreen, the
most user-friendly media-access solution yet created.

³Our goal for the first Meridian Sooloos product was to incorporate the
SpeakerLink technology as well as legacy-standard Meridian Comms, providing
an integrated system that was incredibly simple yet technically and
sonically superior,² said Meridian CEO, Peter Wellikoff. ³Now the Control 10
is not only the perfect complement to a Meridian system, it remains a superb
option for any installation requiring the most intuitive media server on the
market.²

Featuring the Meridian SpeakerLink and legacy Meridian Comms protocols, the
Control 10 can seamlessly integrate with Meridian¹s famed Digital
Loudspeakers, preamp/controllers, and music systems, and includes RS-232 for
integration with the full spectrum of legacy media and home-control systems.
The Control 10 also incorporates on-board S/PDIF coaxial digital outputs,
permitting it to function as a complete Sooloos ³zone².

The desktop-style Control 10 touchscreen features a razor-sharp 17-inch LCD
display with crisp, HD-level imaging and a resistive touch panel with
outstanding user feedback. Adding to its ease of use, the Control 10
includes a slot-loading CD drive in its low-profile base for convenient,
local loading or playback of content without requiring a computer or
outboard disc drive.

The Meridian Sooloos touchscreen uses cleverly integrated heatsinking for a
fanless design that renders the Control 10 completely silent, and thus ideal
for the most demanding listening environments and customers. Like all
Sooloos components, the Control 10 communicates with its Storage and Source
components via standard TCP/IP Ethernet connectivity, using either the
supplied high-quality Neutrik EtherCon connectors or any conventional
CAT5/5e/6 RJ-45 cables.

In the ever-changing world of home-entertainment technology, the Meridian
Sooloos media-management system is a complete solution that allows music and
photos to be easily accessed easily and reliably stored.

Apple announces fifth-generation iPod touch: 4-inch screen

Today at its iPhone launch event, Apple announced yet another piece of hardware: the fifth-generation iPod touchAs rumored, it has a 4-inch display, the same 326 ppi panel used on the new iPhone 5. As you might have guessed, this is also the thinnest iPod touch to date, measuring in at 6.1mm and weighing 88 grams (3.1 ounces). On the inside, it packs an A5 chip promising seven times the graphics performance of the last-gen model. The battery is rated for 40 hours of music playback, or eight hours of video — a slight improvement over the last-generation touch.
The rear camera has also gotten an upgrade: it’s now built on a 5-megapixel sensor, paired with a backside-illuminated f/2.4 lens. It also now shoots 1080p video, and Apple has also added image stabilization. And yes, it supports the same panorama shooting feature as the iPhone 5. The front camera, meanwhile, is 720p and supports FaceTime (over WiFi only, of course — no 4G models here).
If that image stabilization feature doesn’t do it for you, there’s also a protruding button on the back, to which you can attach a wrist strap — you know, so that if the shakes get really bad you at least won’t drop the thing. Perhaps the biggest news, though, is that the new iPod touch has Siri built in, making it the first non-iPhone device from Apple to get this feature. Finally, it comes loaded with iO6 and if you don’t know what that entails, well, we’ve got your feature summary right here.
The iPod touch will be available in two flavors: a 32GB model ($299) and a 64GB number ($399). It will be sold in five colors: “raw aluminum,” black, blue, yellow and red, and a (PRODUCT) RED version will also be available. Three hundred bucks too pricey for your next PMP? The last-generation touch will remain on the market, with the 16GB one going for $199 and the 32GB version selling for $249.

Habey USA's 12-inch panel PC brings that rugged look to your home

It's a shame this steel-encased touchscreen PC from Habey USA arrived too late for our violent outburston the Engadget Show, but at least it has some broadly agreeable specs. The PPC-6512 can reel off 1080p vids on its 12-inch screen while consuming just 30W thanks to its 1.8GHz Atom D525 and NVIDIA Ion GT218 combo. An empty 2.5-inch removable HDD tray and eSATA port give it potential as a networked storage hub, and an old-school serial port lets it handle home automation controls too. It could also be used as a comms or security terminal, as there's a 1.3MP webcam on board, vesa mounting holes and four USB 2.0 ports. Heck, we'd buy three and rig our whole house up -- were it not for the $800 price tag, the apparently limited availability on Habey USA's underloved Amazon page, and the fact that we like our terminals to show a bit of emotion. Full specs in the PR after the break.

Apple gets patent for in-cell touch display with impeccable timing

Apple gets patent for incell touch display with impeccable timing
So Apple could be working on an iPhone with a thinner display, you say. Look what we have here, possibly in the nick of time: it's a newly granted Apple patent for a screen with in-cell touch, where the LCD and touch recognition are integrated into one panel instead of stacking up in separate layers. Apple's implementation would slim things down by either having electrodes share duties, both driving the display and taking finger input, or stuffing two electrodes into each pixel to accomplish the same goal. The net effect isn't just one of squeezing a device into a thinner chassis; the company also envisions costs coming down by reducing the number of parts and streamlining the manufacturing process. As envisioned, the screen looks like an ideal fit for a significant revamp of Apple's mobile display technology, although we'd be careful about assuming that this or any in-cell touch implementation is a lock for potentially imminent iOS hardware. Apple first filed the patent in early June 2007, before theoriginal iPhone had even marched into a retailer -- display technology has come a long way since then.

Super High Aperture: it's why the new iPad's Retina display is so dense

Super High Aperture. Heard of it? Probably not, but thanks to Apple, you'll probably long for days when you didn't in just a few months. According to an in-depth look from the folks at DisplaySearch, the aforesaid technique is the primary reason that Apple was able to shove 2,048 x 1,536 pixels into the 9.7-inch panel on the new iPad. Not surprisingly, it wasn't Apple that conjured up the magic; instead, it was crafted by engineers at Sharp and JSR (a display materials maker from Japan), but it'll be the iPad that makes an otherwise geeky achievement something that the mainstream covets. According to the science behind it, SHA is "a method of increasing aperture ratio by applying approximately a 3 [micrometer] thick photo-definable acrylic resin layer to planarize the device and increase the vertical gap between the [indium tin oxide] pixel electrodes and signal lines." Reportedly, there are also "at least twice as many" LEDs in the panel compared to that on the iPad 2, further suggesting that there's way more battery within the new guy than the last. Technophiles need only dig into the links below to find plenty more where this came
