During a visit to Samsung's headquarters in Korea earlier this year, we had a chance to talk shop with company execs. The electronics maker's existing mirrorless and point-and-shoot lineups were the primary topic of discussion, but we did catch wind of a Galaxy product possibly to come, from the camera division. A Galaxy camera? That could only mean Android, and a heavy heaping of touch and connectivity. At the time, reps admitted only that they were "considering" such a device, and declined to provide any hint as to design or functionality. And we haven't heard a further peep, until today. As you may have gathered from recent rumors, Samsung's Galaxy Note II is not the only product to be Unpacked this afternoon. Sure enough, the anticipated Galaxy Camera is also on order, and we have all the juicy details just past the break.
Nikon beat Samsung out the door with its Coolpix S800c -- a 16-megapixel snapper powered by Android 2.3.3, but this latest version is an entirely different beast. The entire back of the camera is occupied by an edge-to-edge 4.8-inch 1,280 x 720-pixel (308 ppi) display. It looks like something you'd find on a cellphone, like, say, the Galaxy Note -- having a touch-enabled viewfinder on a compact camera is certainly advantageous. There are still a few hardware buttons on board, including a flash release (there's a pop-up strobe in the top right corner), a power button, zoom toggle and shutter release, but you'll spend most of your time interacting with the Galaxy Camera through touch. With the Auto mode, you'll have access to a touch-to-focus system while leaving the rest of the computing to the camera. Smart Pro Mode is Samsung's version of intelligent auto, offering ideal settings for 10 different scenarios, such as the Waterfall Trace and Night Trace options, which slow down the shutter speed for daylight and evening shoots, respectively.

Despite the Galaxy's rather large profile, Samsung opted for a standard 1/2.33-inch BSI CMOS sensor, capable of 16-megapixel snaps. Don't expect top-of-the-line image quality, but the 21x, f/2.8-5.9, 23-480mm lens will let you get far closer to the action than any smartphone on the market today. This latest point-and-shoot falls within Samsung's SMART lineup, which means there's surely WiFi on board. There's also 3G and 4G connectivity as well, though, delivered from the carrier of your choice through a micro-SIM that slides in beside the microSD card and 1,650 mAh battery, which Samsung reps say can provide up to seven hours of battery life while connected.

Naturally, there are plenty of options for sharing. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean's on board, so you can add any of your favorite imaging apps from Google Play (yes, even Instagram -- a future update will add zoom functionality, too). There are also plenty of native sharing and sorting options, including a device-wide search tool that lets you locate shots based on a face tag, location or time. Best Group Pose will automatically select the ideal portrait of you and your friends, while Share Shot lets you use WiFi Direct to send content to your buds with Galaxy cameras and smartphones in realtime. There's also an Auto Cloud Backup feature, which provides redundancy by sending your photos wirelessly as you shoot -- assuming you're connected to WiFi or a wireless carrier.

We had a chance to shoot with the Galaxy Camera for a few minutes today. The camera we had was clearly an early prototype -- we did experience focusing issues and a colleague's device locked up during the demo -- but considering that it's not set to ship until October, Samsung has a bit of time left to work out the kinks. Otherwise the experience was quite positive; we found the camera to be very responsive and intuitive, especially if you're already familiar with Android. Upon boot-up, you're met with a typical Jelly Bean home screen, with a standard Camera shortcut, located front and center, launching the advanced interface. You can, of course, use the device as a data-only smartphone of sorts as well, surfing the web, responding to email and consuming media just as you would on any other Galaxy.

Without standard phone functionality, the Galaxy Camera won't replace your smartphone -- not to mention that the rather bulky form-factor would end up being quite a nuisance -- but if you don't make calls, this could theoretically be the only device in your (rather spacious) pocket. We can't speak to image quality just yet, as we weren't permitted to transmit samples, but based on the existing SMART line, it's safe to expect perfectly acceptable, though not spectacular stills. The device is set to begin shipping in October, and will be sold through camera retailers as well as carrier outlets, though pricing has not yet been released. TuneIn brings the world of internet radio to the Tesla Model S touch panel display



The Tesla Model S has an amazing 17" touch panel display in the dash board, offering full internet access along with a full gamut of infotainment services, which now include the TuneIn internet radio streaming platform.

TuneIn, the service to access radio broadcasts over the Internet, announced today it will be available on the Tesla Model S touch panel display. This makes the 200th distribution deal for TuneIn, and is the first time TuneIn has been available in any vehicle dashboard system without the use of a smart-phone application. This underscores the flexibility of the Model S touch panel display.
The center display on the Tesla Model S dashboard is a 17" LCD display. Software running on the display runs an infotainment system, that controls the heating and cooling system, lets the driver customize settings on the Model S, and tune in radio stations and the like. It also sports full Internet access using 3G wireless technologies, and there is a full web browser running on the display.
The new TuneIn application for the Tesla Model S lets the driver tune in to any of the myriad of internet radio stations, from around the world, available via the TuneIn service. The company claims the TuneIn application user experience is designed for minimal distraction, and screen shots provided by the company look similar to tuning a radio. With the TuneIn App for iPhone one programs in "Presets" which appear on a home screen for easy access to favorite stations, or one uses the search function to find desired stations.
TuneIn broadcasts stream over the Internet connection built into the Model S. The service provides excellent sound quality even for radio stations located on other continents. For example, the yearly TT ZERO electric motorcycle race is broadcast live by Manx Radio, one of the stations available through TuneIn, allowing a reporter to cover the race without attending in person. TuneIn obviously consumes Internet data, but it's unclear from the Tesla Motors website whether the Model S owner will incur any data charges as do smart phone users.
The Tesla Model S is an all electric sedan manufactured by the company which brought us the Tesla Roadster. It has a EPA certified 265 mile driving range (Tesla claims over 300 miles), with performance that smokes the Tesla Roadster, and an amazing range of features.

Nikkei unruffled by weak GDP, investors eye stimulus

    TOKYO, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei share average
barely flinched on Monday as investors shrugged off data showing
lower-than-expected gross domestic product growth but held off
from selling on hopes of stimulus measures to boost growth.
    Stocks that advanced on Friday continued their rise, with
online gaming firm DeNA Co Ltd gaining 2.1 percent
after soaring 22.1 percent on Friday due to strong results.
Others continued their descent from last week, leaving the index
largely unchanged as volume slipped to an eight-month low. 
    The Nikkei dipped 0.1 percent to 8885.15, stifled as
August's event calendar hit a lull and Japanese holidays this
week thinned out volumes. The index marked its biggest weekly
gain since February last week, rising 3.9 percent on speculation
that more global stimulus was on its way. 
    "At the moment we're just waiting - if the U.S. data out in
the latter half of the week is good, then it will allow the yen
to soften against the dollar, which would be a positive," said
Masayuki Otani, chief market analyst at Securities Japan. 
    Investors are looking to a raft of data from the United
States this week, including jobless claims, retail sales and a
Philadelphia Fed Survey, for clues on whether a slowdown in the
world's largest economy has bottomed out.
    The Nikkei barely moved after data showed Japanese GDP grew
just 0.3 percent in the April-June quarter, translating to an
annualised increase of 1.4 percent, below the median forecast of
2.5 percent. 
    "You could say it's a sign that the government hasn't yet
put together a proper reconstruction budget," said Hideyuki
Fukunaga, CEO of Investrust, referring to work to rebuild after
2011's devastating earthquake and tsunami.
     "But low growth is really down to the unseasonably cold and
wet weather in April to June, which delayed sales of summer
goods. The results should balance out by the end of the year."
    Construction-related stocks that should have benefited from
the reconstruction drive were suffering from overly confident
forecasts.
     Taiheiyo Cement Co lost 4.5 percent after the
company reported a first-quarter operating profit of 490 million
yen ($6.3 million), less than half of the consensus, while Daiwa
House Industry Co Ltd dropped 3.9 percent as investors
deemed its 50 billion yen ($639 million) purchase of contractor
Fujita too expensive.
    Daiwa House's guidance that its operating profit can improve
to 6 billion yen "is optimistic judging from the situation at
other construction companies," Deutsche Securities analysts Yoji
Otani and Akiko Komine wrote in a note.
    The broader Topix closed flat at 746.95 , with the
number of traded shares at just 65 percent of its 90-day
average, the lowest since Dec. 30. Volume on the Nikkei was 58.1
percent of its 90-day average, also the lowest since the last
trading day of 2011. 
    
    YEARNING FOR BETTER EARNINGS
    Japan's earnings season, now in its last throes, has been
largely disappointing, with 53 percent of the 152 Nikkei
companies that have reported results falling short of guidance.
Many firms have cut full-year profit outlooks due to a strong
yen and the impact of a global slowdown on demand. 
    Some companies that were punished for revising guidance have
recovered slightly, due to other news. Sony Corp.,
which  took a hit after cutting its full-year outlook, gained
after saying on Friday it would make internet provider So-net
Entertainment into a wholly owned unit.
. Shares of Sony rose 2.7 percent that day and
another 0.2 percent on Monday.     
    So-net remained untraded with a glut of buy orders, although
it was nominally trading at 472,000 yen, a jump of 17.2 percent.
    Nippon Sheet Glass Co Ltd climbed 10.7 percent
after the Nikkei business daily said the company would resume
the construction of a Vietnamese touch screen panel plant after
halting it in February due to bad business conditions. 
    Worse-than-expected sales forced the glassmaker to cut its
full-year sales forecast, for which it was dragged down 14.2
percent on Aug. 3. 
    Sharp Corp dropped 4.3 percent, continuing a sharp
descent triggered by a downward revision of its full-year
guidance, despite a Nikkei business daily report on Saturday
that it is considering selling its liquid crystal display (LCD)
modules to Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry.
    Market analysts said the market was likely to remain in
"holiday mode" this week, characterised by thin trade due to a
lack of catalysts.
    "It's going to be defined by technical parameters this
week," said Toshiyuki Kanayama, senior market analyst at Monex. 
   "There's quite significant resistance at the 200-day moving
average mark around 8,957; it tested that level last week and
quickly backed away, and this week there doesn't seem to be any
factors that will push it beyond that."
    The Nikkei is up 5.1 percent on the year, but is still 13.4
percent off its one-year high of 10,255.15 hit on March 27, hurt
by concerns about falling global demand.   
    Despite the sharp gain in the first quarter and sell-off in
the second quarter, intraday volatility has eased sharply this
year. Daily swings in the Nikkei have exceeded 2.5 percent for
only four trading sessions so far this year, down from 16 for
all of 2011. That compared with one such day for the U.S. S&P
500 and 33 such sessions for the Euro STOXX 50
