Haptix aims to be a “mouse killer

Haptix, a little camera device that promises to turn regular surfaces into 3-D multi-touch controllers, has exceeded its Kickstarter goal of $100,000 in just five days.
Haptix2That’s enough for the five-person Haptix team to complete “tooling” of its device so it can be manufactured in China and sold for $70.
Haptix aims to be a “mouse killer,” so users can precisely manipulate what they see on the screen in front of them by using their fingers on any flat surface. Of course, they’ll have to set up Haptix so it can “view” that surface, but the gadget should work on a desk, or on top of a regular keyboard.
Haptix co-creator Darren Lim says the trick is his team’s software, which allows affordable 3-D sensing to work in poor conditions like close proximity to surfaces.
Sure, $100,000 is a particularly modest goal as far as Kickstarter hardware campaigns go, but now it’s out of the way. Today, Haptix is telling backers that if it can hit $150,000, it will also produce a pressure-sensitive stylus for artists.
Haptix fits into one of the more interesting current trends in technology — taking users away from the abstractions of standard computer interfaces and back into the environments around us. I like to think of it as “the disappearing interface.” It all started with the touchscreen — where you feel that you directly manipulate virtual objects — and now is extending into the air and onto regular surfaces.
After Microsoft’s Kinect, the best-known recent effort in this space is Leap Motion, a well-established startup with nearly $50 million in funding as well as a $25 million fund from its investors to support third-party application development. Leap famously and somewhat magically allows users to control their PCs by gesturing in the air. But it has suffered delays, and continues to be “challenging” and “tiring,” given that users must hold their hands in the air for extended periods of time.
In a way, Haptix seems less exciting than Leap Motion because it’s anchored to surfaces. It also seems like it might be less relevant in the coming years, as more laptops add touchscreens, and as tablets continue to rise in popularity.
Lim disagrees, because Haptix will allow users to comfortably rest their hands so they can use the controller all day without tiring, for all sorts of tasks other than typing on a keyboard. Also, Lim said, Haptix doesn’t rely on infrared, so it will work in all lighting conditions, where Leap doesn’t function as well in very bright light.
Haptix currently works on Windows and Ubuntu, with Android in progress. Lim says the most salient bit of feedback so far has been from backers who want a Mac version. If all goes as planned, the device will be shipped to Kickstarter backers in January, and applications won’t have to be modified to support Haptix input.
Haptix has been in development for a year, and Lim received support for the project as one of the young entrepreneurs selected to be a Thiel Fellow this year. He said the company is also now raising an angel round of funding.

Touchscreen controls coming to Chrome


The latest developer ‘Canary’ version of Google’s desktop Internet browser can support swipes, pinches and other hands-on operations.
Touch screens are already the standard for mobile devices — even BlackBerry’s latest flagship keypad phone the Q10 also offers a high-definition touch screen in support of its QWERTY keyboard. Likewise, without the leaps and bounds made in multi-touch and finger-tracking technology, the tablet would still be something a doctor prescribes to treat illnesses and not something that schools are starting to prescribe as a means of boosting children’s educational attainment.
Indeed, so big are touch screens that according to Lux Research, the market for haptics — the technology that provides a tactile response to a touch command — will experience a 16-fold increase over the next 12 years as touch and gestures become the norm for everything from smartwatches to control pads on running machines.
“An emerging wave of haptics offers the potential for a more intuitive and information-rich touch experience than today’s simple whole-device vibration,” said Anthony Vicari, Lux Research Associate, of the company’s research, published yesterday.
However, while there’s little doubt that the touch screen is going to play a greater and greater role in how we as consumers interact with and make sense of modern technology, the jury is still well and truly out as to whether it has a role — haptic or non-haptic — to play in navigating and interacting with the traditional notebook or desktop PC.
Apple believes that touch screens are not only unnecessary but actually counterproductive on computers. Its research into the subject showed that forcing users to take their hands off the keyboard and mouse, change their seating position, lean forward and touch the screen in order to achieve a task or launch an application that could have been done in microseconds via a mouse click, keyboard shortcut or voice command, destroys productivity.
However, Microsoft has ‘bet the farm’ on touch as the future of the same computer interface, which many commentators claim is the reason why consumers have been less than willing to upgrade to Windows 8. Intel has also come out on Microsoft’s side and announced that any manufacturer who wishes to describe their product as an ultrabook will, from 2014, have to include a touch screen in order to do so.
And now Google is also playing around with the same interface, albeit limited to its web browser. As well as supporting pinch to zoom and left and right swipes to load cached pages, it also offers support for Microsoft’s virtual keyboard that appears on the screen when a webpage field requires information — say for example a social media login page. Just like Apple, Google is a serious innovator in the consumer electronics sphere, even if, until recently, its efforts have been focused on software and services, rather than hardware.
And, although the features in the latest Chrome build will not be filtering through to the latest consumer version within the next few weeks, the fact that the company is considering them at all highlights the fact that although traditional PC sales are falling, it is still a market well and truly dominated by Microsoft. Focusing touch input around a specific computer function also makes a lot of sense.
If the swipes and pinches are specifically for browsing, then there is no chance of disrupting productivity. It also means that as Windows 8 tablets become more popular that their owners will be able to use Chrome instead of Internet Explorer and still have the same features and commands, literally at their fingertips.

GP attractions only a touch screen away

Thousands of pamphlets can now be at your fingertips and be flipped through with a single touch of a screen as the Grande Prairie Region Tourism Association officially unveiled its new information kiosk at the Grande Prairie Airport.
The kiosk, which took six weeks of designing and assembling, was officially unveiled at the Grande Prairie Airport Wednesday for travellers to use while mapping out their vacation in the area.

“We want to be a one-stop location for finding out all the current events, where they are, what’s happening, photos of them, locator maps to work out how to get to them. So this is one ideal spot for us to be promoting all those things that happen around the region,” said Ainsley Lamontagne, executive director of the Grande Prairie Region Tourism Association.
“There’s also an interactive map so you can tap on shopping centers, restaurants, museums, the art gallery and it gives you directions from the airport. It maps it out for you, how far away it is, how hard it is to get to and it’s actually attached to a Google maps.”
The kiosk, which looks like a larger version of an iPad, is a laptop-shaped touch screen on a stand with various categories such as hotels, restaurants and upcoming events to search through for planning out the perfect vacation while staying in the city. Lamontagne said anyone who has any experience using an iPhone should be able to use the machine.
“There’s not a whole lot of different icons to chose from… you can always come out of any page directly onto what you’re looking for,” she said. “It’s not cluttered, it’s very simple: The hotels, the attractions, the maps, the events and nominating a Service Superstar.”
All the information available on the kiosk is updated from the Grande Prairie Region Tourism Association’s location at Centre 2000, via its website and WiFi.
“We’re developing surveys to go onto the kiosk so… if you provide information about how long your stay was in Grande Prairie, we can use that to clarify what our visitors are doing, then you are entered into competitions and so we’re developing those and we’re really quite excited. It’s going to be an even more useful tool the more we get to know it,” added Lamontagne.
The kiosk was set up a Centre 2000 for Travel Alberta staff to become familiar with and see what changes would need to be made to it before it was officially launched this week.
Something else to be proud of, besides the fact this is the first kiosk of its kind to be put to use in the Grande Prairie area, is that the machine was built and designed by a local company, Broca Media. Funding and developing for the project was also done through Destination Marketing Properties in Grande Prairie. Broca Media is also working on another information touch screen kiosk for Evergreen Park.
“The one out of Evergreen Park is specifically build around Evergreen and its area,” said Karna Germshied, owner of the company.
“So out there, our users are going to be using it to find a little bit more information that they didn’t realize was there like a lot of people go out to the TEC centre and don’t realize that there’s the bar and the casino to eat at and things like that.”
As well as promoting the different activity bases at the park, it will also be able to help visitors find their way around the area as well as different events in and around the area.
Currently, the Evergreen Park kiosk is nearing completion.
“We’re just at that point of finalizing the final content. Everything has been built to this point so the project is almost complete, we just need to bring the kiosk and the touch screen together,” she said.
The kiosk as Evergreen Park, Germsheid said, should be up and running at the location within a week to 10 days.

Touchscreen Devices Will Soon Be Able to Identify Fingerprints

Touchscreen
A new touchscreen display, which is capable of identifying fingerprints, is closer to reality.
Not only will the display redefine online security but could revolutionise the way in which humans and computers interact in the public sphere.
Current touchscreens emit light but are not able to sense it, which makes it impossible to identify fingerprints unless a supplemental sensor is added.
Researchers Christian Holz of the Hasso Plattner Institute in Germany told New Scientist that these touchscreens cannot scan fingerprints and fingerprint sensors are not able to show images.

Wintek to benefit from Google and Amazon touch panel orders

Tablet Touch panel maker Wintek is expected to reach NT$8 billion (US$267.47 million) in revenues during the third quarter of 2013 due to orders from Google and Amazon, according to industry sources. Wintek has reportedly begun shipping touch panels for Google's next generation Nexus 7 as well as Amazon's 7-inch Kindle Fire HD as of June 2013 and will continue doing so throughout July and August when Wintek's' shipments are expected to peak, said the sources. Both of the tablets will reportedly use OGS touch technology as well as high resolution TFT panels. Due to the pricing for OGS technology, Wintek is expected to maintain its profits throughout the quarter despite an expected decline in its gross margin, the sources noted. Touch panel shipments for the Google Nexus 7 are expected to be around 500,000 units a month as of July, the sources said, adding that monthly touch panel shipments for the Kindle Fire will be around 300,000-400,000 in the third quarter for a total of about 6-7 million units in 2013. The sources also revealed that Amazon is likely to put out another 7-inch entry-level tablet in 2013 that will use G/G touch panel technology. The sources added that Wintek's revenues are still expected to remain strong despite the company fading out from Apple's supply chain. Previously, orders from Apple made up a large proportion of Wintek's revenues, but as of first-half 2013 only about 30% of the company's revenues came from Apple and that percentage is expected to drop to around 10% by the second half of the year. Ford restores low-tech knobs to cars’ touch screens


The move is a response to criticism that its infotainment systems are overly complilcated


After loads of criticism, Ford is taking some of the touch out of MyFord Touch, its touch screen-based infotainment system.
It is restoring knobs to the controls, much as it has done all along in its F-150 trucks. The announcement comes two days before J.D. Power and Associates is due to announce its annual Initial Quality Survey, a closely watched industry measure. For the past two years, the survey has dramatically lowered Ford’s ranking in overall quality, apparently largely because of the complicated and distracting infotainment system controls. Each time, Ford executives said they are fixing the problem.
Ford buried the announcement that is going to put back knobs — a fixture of controlling entertainment systems since the invention of the car radio — instead just touch controls in an announcement touting all of MyFord Touch’s sales success. It says it use the same system that it has seen in its pickup trucks across the Ford lineup.
“While the features made available by MyFord Touch are certainly compelling, the replacement of simple knobs and buttons may have been a bit overkill,” says Jack Nerad, exective editorial director for Kelley Blue Book. “When it comes to performing simple tasks, such as adjusting the volume of the radio, its best to stick to what works and what people are familiar with, and in this case, nothing beats a knob.”
Ford says MyFord Touch, along with a feature that syncs it to a cellphone, are sold on 79% of its 2013 vehicles. It says more than half of customers cite the touch screen as a reason to buy.

Ready for a 3D touchscreen?


Soon, future tablets, smartphones and mobile devices may sport touchscreens that not only let you pinch and zoom, but also let you poke and stretch them as well.
The screen, which its creators described as 2.5-D instead of full 3-D, has a flexible liquid rubber sheet laid over actuators, and sits under a Kinect-based camera that projects images onto the sheet, Discovery News said.
“If you pull on it, the sheet makes a little mountain. Poke it and it dents. Rub your finger on it and it senses the friction. Stretch it and it shows the distortion on the image,” it said.
Discovery News said the camera also measures how deep the screen is poked into it or how far its stretched.
Appropriately, the device designed by Massachussetts Institute of Technology Media Lab’s Dhairya Dand and Rob Hemsley was named Obake – a mythical Japanese shapeshifting spirit.
Dand and Hemsley said today’s 3D displays are not true 3D but mere optical illusions.
“We created a 2.5D display that is shape changing with the help of actuators, depth cameras, projector and a silicone screen. ‘Obake’ (o-baa-keh) as we lovingly call it, imagines how we would interact with elastic display. We could literally pinch and pull them!” they said.
“Create mountains by pulling them out of the screen, draw rivers with your fingers, elevate an entire terrain to see a cut section view. Make your data come alive,” they added.
The two also said current state-of-the-art touchscreens still assume 2D images, while many 3D displays do not exploit the range of gestural controls.
Long way to go
But Discovery News noted it will take some time before this technology finds its way into a mobile device as small as a smartphone.
“Actuators are relatively large, and there would have to be room for pressing in as well as extruding, and the need for a projector. Odds are this technology will first show up on tabletop applications,” it said.  — ELR, GMA News

Intel could make $200 touchscreen PCs a reality

Ultrabooks currently cost upwards $1,000, but Intel thinks super-thin laptops could soon cost as little as $200.

To give the badly slumping PC market a much-need jolt, Intel is thinking about using one of the most effective tools in its arsenal: lowering chip prices.

Intel (INTC, Fortune 500) chips can make up as much as 33% of a PC's cost, according to supply chain analysis firm IHS. That means the chipmaker has the power to lower PC prices drastically.
It might do just that. On a conference call with investors last month, former CEO Paul Otellini floated the idea of bringing $200 ultra-thin touchscreen notebooks to the market by the end of 2013.
Intel has been pushing the super-fast and super-thin ultrabook. But ultrabook sales have disappointed, with many pundits blaming price points of as much as $1,000.
A lower-end device that's similar to an ultrabook may be the key. Otellini was careful to note that a $200 device would have to use an "Atom" line of chips typically reserved for phones and tablets. That goes against Intel's strict definition of what an actual ultrabook should be, but those cheap ultrabooks could include other desirable features like a touchscreen and thin form factor.
IHS made the case that Intel can -- and should -- consider cutting the price of its PC parts to get to that $200 price point.
"A price point that low seems far-fetched considering the mobile PC prices of today," Craig Stice, IHS's senior principal analyst for computing programs, wrote in a recent report. But he pointed out that netbooks came down to $200 even at the height of their popularity. The small PCs enjoyed quite a bit of popularity before tablets essentially killed them in 2010.
A similar pricing model for ultrabooks could "support a no-frills type of ultrathin PC," Stice added.
PC makers would have to do their part as well, perhaps by sacrificing some profit margin to order to sell more PCs. But with the manufacturers on board, the industry may finally be able to stave off the tablet's cannibalization of the PC market..
At $200, an "ultrathin" or "ultraslim" type of device would be in line with the cost of those lower end tablets like the Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500) Kindle Fire or Barnes & Noble(BKS, Fortune 500) Nook Tablet.
Richard Shim, a senior analyst with NPD Display Search, isn't convinced that a $200 touch PC is definitely achievable. But if it is, they likely still won't cannibalize tablet sales, he said.
"In markets that are already mature, a lot of people have both a PC and a tablet," Shim said. "And even in emerging markets, which have been the driver of growth for the PC industry and notebooks in particular, first-time buyers are being offered low-cost tablets that already pack a lot of computing power."
Stice, the IHS analyst, agreed.
"It would have to be a pretty notable turnaround for even these low-cost PCs to hurt tablets significantly," Stice said. "It's probably not a matter of media tablets cannibalized, but maybe a little more of a balance where PCs and tablets can live in the market together happily."
Even if a media tablet takeover isn't possible, the emergence of $200 ultraslim would be part of recent, much needed innovation in the PC market, Shim said.
"Before the ultrabooks and tablets, the market hadn't been that dynamic in the past few years," Shim said. "I think we'll look back on this year in particular and say it really laid the groundwork of change for the next few years."

How it works
removable Infrared technology uses infrared emitter-collector pairs to project an invisible grid of light a small distance over the surface of the screen. When a user touch the surface of screen, the infrared emitted from LED beam is broken ,the absence of the signal at the collector is detected and receiver transmits X-Y axis information to the PC port via touch controller.
removable Infrared technology is the survivor of harsh applications. It's the only technology that does not rely on an overlay or substrate to register a touch, so it's impossible to physically "wear out" the touch screen. It's an excellent choice for harsh industrial and outdoor kiosk applications.

Pre-orders HTC phone go live





UK buyers can now place a pre-order to secure the HTC Butterfly smartphone, which will feature a five inch touch panel display and some of the top hardware components currently available.
It was originally thought that Brits would be missing out on the Butterfly and indeed HTC has remained confident that it is not officially releasing this particular handset here.
However, online retailer, Expansys, listed the phone on its e-commerce site this week, prompting many to assume that it will indeed be landing in the UK.
There are lots of tasty features onboard the Butterfly, with its five inch touch panel display featuring a full HD 1080p resolution. This means it is large and also offers a much higher pixel density than its closest rival, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.
Whether or not the HTC Butterfly gets a UK launch via official channels, it seems certain that this Taiwanese manufacturer will release similarly specified handsets next year, in order to compete with rivals.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony Xperia Yuga are likely to match the Butterfly in the display department, so British consumers will not be short on high end smartphone options.

USPTO tentatively invalidates key Apple multitouch patent


USPTO tentatively invalidates all claims of key Apple multitouch patent
The US Patent and Trademark Office tentatively invalidated Apple’s so-called rubber-banding patent back in October, and it looks like it’s now done so again with one of the company’s key multitouch-related patents. According to FOSS Patents, the USPTO has issued an Office Action rejecting all 20 claims of patent 7,479,949, which is specifically related to scrolling and is described as “Touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristics.” Unlike the rubber-banding patent, though, this one did not figure in Apple’s recent trial with Samsung, although it has been used in cases against Motorola and HTC.
Update: To be clear, this is just the first step of the patent’s re-examination and Apple gets to respond to each of the issues raised by the USPTO. So, invalidation of all (or any) of the claims is far from assured.

Amazon bringing Voice Guide and Explore by Touch features to Kindle Fires for vision-impaired users


Amazon’s been attuned to the needs of its vision-impaired customers for years, first rolling out text-to-speech technologyon its original Kindle e-reader years ago. Today the company revealed plans to add to that feature set in its Kindle Fire andFire HD (7-inch) tablets with Voice Guide and Explore by Touch technology.
Voice Guide’s an improvement upon regular text-to-speech tech that reads aloud any action performed by users — things like announcing app names and book titles when they’re selected. Explore by Touch lets folks swipe their fingers across their Fire’s display and identifies each onscreen item as their phalanges pass over them. Once aware of what app or piece of content’s being touched, a simple tap opens the item. Ready for the new assisted navigation experience right now? Well, all you anxious Fire owners will have to wait, the update doesn’t land until early next year.

Sharp unveils an 80-inch touchscreen for the boardroom


For the corporate types, Sharp is taking its massive Gen-10 1080p LCDs and adding a touchscreen as well as integrating presentation and video conferencing technologies like Skype, WebEx, GoToMetting. There is even a package that includes an optional compact whiteboard PC preloaded with Windows 7 and drivers for the display. The 80-inch touchscreen display will be available in late February for $13,795, but the press release after the break doesn't mention a price for the 60 or 70-inch versions.

MeridianSooloos produce first jointly developed touchpanel: Control 10



Given just how zany the past few months have been in the HD world, you probably
forgot all about Meridian and Sooloos' little tie-up back in December. Lo and behold,
 the newly conjoined company has just released its first jointly developed product,
the Control 10 touchscreen. The device integrates Meridian's proprietary connectivity
 with a Sooloos touchscreen in order to create what's called the "most user-friendly
media-access solution yet." For those with lots of Meridian equipment, it'll be hard to
let this one pass given just how well it'll integrate, and there's also RS-232 for more
